The proverb was first found in a work by Sir Thomas Overbury, 1613: "All the carnall beauty of my wife, Is but skin deep." 我妻子所有的肉體美只是膚淺的。

He should have said, "All the carnal beauty of my wife is only matched by her virtues." 我妻子所有肉體美唯她美德足夠匹配。
